the origin of things
inspiration hides in the overlooked. discover what everyday objects can teach us about creativity, beginnings and building brands from one simple idea.

everything starts as an idea
before the paperclip held a stack of pages together, it was just a piece of wire.
before the light bulb changed the way people lived, it was a problem someone refused to accept.
before the first brand had a logo, a campaign or a social media page, it was simply a thought in someone’s mind.
we often notice things only after they become useful. we see the finished product, the polished identity and the familiar shape. we rarely stop to wonder where it began.
but inspiration hides in the overlooked.
every object has an origin.
every brand does too.
the real question is: what was the first thought?
ordinary things are full of imagination
look around you.
a chair is not just a chair. it is an answer to the need for rest. a door is an invitation, a boundary and a decision about what stays outside. a notebook is a place where unfinished thoughts are allowed to exist.
even the simplest objects carry evidence of someone noticing a problem and imagining a better way.
this is where creativity usually begins.
not with a perfect plan. not with a finished vision. it begins with curiosity. someone sees something that could be easier, clearer, more beautiful or more useful, and decides to explore the possibility.
the origin of things reminds us that big outcomes often come from small observations.
the first version is rarely perfect
most things we use today were not created in their final form.
they were tested, adjusted, simplified and tried again. the first version may have been awkward. it may have looked nothing like the finished product. but it existed, and that was enough to begin.
brands go through the same process.
the first name may change. the first logo may be replaced. the first campaign may teach the team what not to do. the first audience may not be the right audience.
that does not make the beginning a failure.
it makes the beginning real.
a brand is not born fully formed. it grows through decisions, conversations, experiments and the courage to keep shaping the idea.
every brand starts with a human need
behind every strong brand is a reason.
someone wanted to solve a problem. make something accessible. create a new experience. bring people together. challenge an old way of doing things. make life feel a little better.
the product may be what people buy, but the original need is often what makes them care.
this is why the origin story matters.
it gives a brand something deeper than a list of features. it gives people a reason to believe in the work. it helps turn a business into something with personality, memory and direction.
at muse inc., this is where the work begins. the team looks for the raw truth at the centre of a brand and shapes it into a story people can understand and feel. explore the muse inc. approach.
how to find the origin of your brand
finding the beginning does not require a complicated exercise.
start with the moment before the business existed.
ask:
what problem first needed solving?
what frustration became impossible to ignore?
what did the founder notice that others missed?
what feeling inspired the first step?
what did the brand want to change?
the answers often contain the strongest material.
they can shape the brand voice, visual identity, campaign ideas and the way people experience the business. when the original thought is clear, the rest of the communication feels more natural.
the goal is not to make the brand sound older or more impressive.
the goal is to make it feel true.
from one thought to a complete brand
look closer
the next time you use something ordinary, pause for a moment.
someone imagined it before you ever touched it.
someone noticed a gap, asked a question or believed there could be another way. that small act of attention became an object, a system, a business or a brand.
the same possibility exists in every new idea.
before the logo, there is a thought. before the campaign, there is a feeling. before the business, there is a reason.
inspiration is not always hidden in extraordinary places.
sometimes, it is sitting on your desk.
